Well my manual shows the following:

Free-Form Syntax {EVAL{(HMR)}} result = expression
{EVAL{(HMR)}} result += expression
{EVAL{(HMR)}} result -= expression
{EVAL{(HMR)}} result *= expression
{EVAL{(HMR)}} result /= expression
{EVAL{(HMR)}} result **= expression

EVAL is an optional op-code. If you want to use any of the op-code extenders (the name's a giveaway) then you have to have an op-code to extend! i.e. EVAL.

So H, M and R extenders all require the use of the op-code.
