Actually, the x'0A' is an ASCII linefeed in an EBCDIC string (don't ask why; it's both complicated and stupid).

And the problem turned out to be something very different from what I was expecting: a dirty, stinking, !@#$!@ !$#@$ typo: EVENTDTL instead of EVENTDTLX, introduced when I had to add EVENTDTLX (a working copy of EVENTDTL) for another reason, and missed two places where I needed to change EVENTDTL references to EVENTDTLX.
