No, I'm not passing a data structure (which is the the blanks showing up in the numeric fields had me stumped, too :-). But your suggestion about the %len gave me an idea -- in cvtCase, I just wrapped all the logic in an if (%len(inputstr) > 0) block,
with an else setting the outputstr to an empty string before returning it, and that works fine. :-)).

I'm guessing that when a blank string was passed in, the length of the output string was being set to some (random?) number, which then blanked out who knows what on its return. Seems a little odd ....
