If you know Python, or don't mind learning Python, I recommend using
iSeries Python 2.7 and the xlrd module:

http://www.iseriespython.com
http://pypi.python.org/pypi/xlrd

Installation of xlrd (or any other third-party Python package) on the
i is a matter of copying the right package directory into the right
IFS directory (the usual automated installation methods don't work on
the i). Let me know if you need help with this.
