I think it's important to read ILE Concepts. It's a pretty good manual. 
I think you'll be able to tell which sections you can safely skim over, 
and which ones you should read carefully.

It won't necessarily tell you best practices, but it will give you the 
background you need to assess any best practice recommendations you do find.
