But, I want to investigate Python - any hints for starters ?

Given what your shop is most comfortable with, it's a no-brainer to use Scott's POI-based HSSF and XSSF stuff:

I don't think anything comes close given your RPG-centric environment.
(If you just so happen to have anyone who has heard of Python, then it's another story. ;)
