There is a push-pull between learning about the web from the nuts and
bolts up (sockets, firewalls, well-known ports, protocols, etc) and
getting going by use of a well established framework (CGIDEV2, MAILTOOL,
etc). If you learn the hard way, you'll undoubtedly be able to fix
things easier when they break. On the other hand, it pays to learn from
the mistakes of others - I'm not going to live long enough to make them
all myself.

Which is why I'm suggesting a framework. I see that Krengel Tech have
an RPG-XML service program along with an example of using it to
interface with FedEx:
