That would require the filename variable to actually have x'00' after the file name. (Which it might have ...)

The usual way to call open() is to define the parameter with options(*string), and then just pass the trimmed filename directly. Or use options(*string : *trim) and just pass the filename.

Also, make sure you have the VALUE keyword on the file name parameter in the prototype.
