I am still a little skeptical about its effectiveness (you know what
they say about things that seem too good to be true)

The only thing I can think of is to use an EDTCDE that doesn't fill the
field with zeros. If the field is already full of zeros, VALNUM won't help
against 000003 turning into 100003.
