Yeah, the most appropriate response depends a lot on your intended
audience. In some circles, "programmer" is more prestigious than
"database <anything>". In other circles, "<anything> engineer" is more
prestigious than "<anything not containing 'engineer'>".

So maybe it would help if OP gives a bit more context/purpose.

I said "Yeah, we have engineers here too.... they drive the train". We really did......

I often respond along those lines whenever someone mentions "engineer"
as an occupation. You can also make silly puns by conflating the
meanings of "conductor".
