Does that mean to suggest that the SQLRPGLE program was previously registered to the SQL as an external routine, using the CREATE PROCEDURE [external] syntax, such that an SQL CALL is the means to directly invoke that External-SP; i.e. the SQL RPGLE is being called *as* the External SP?

Can anyone suggest how I can see if there are any bottlenecks that
are slowing down the processing.

Typically as a cursory review, I would run with my application logging and query debug messages activated.
