In starting over I looked at Scott's example, STOCKQTY.  In the 
documentation are these lines:

      * To compile:
      *
      *>  CRTSQLRPGI OBJ(STOCKQTY) OBJTYPE(*MODULE) -
      *>             RPGPPOPT(*LVL2) DBGVIEW(*SOURCE)
      *
      *>  CRTPGM PGM(STOCKQTY) MODULE(STOCKQTY) ACTGRP(KLEMENT) -

which I have seen nowhere else.  Is it possible that I need to 
incorporate these compile instructions?
