Folks, all this seems insanely complicated instead of using a make tool. If
you have a make tool, you just put the instructions in the header and
everytime you compile you have the instructions and your change management
system can use the same instructions. No trying to guess what goes where.
You still have a problem using binding directories if you have binder
language.

So I have a service program XVSETL which as a single module XVSETL_M01 and
a binder of XVSETL_B, I cannot specify that except by entering the command.
.

If I have a make tool, I can simply specify.

//*_>_O DLTSRVPGM SRVPGM(@OJBLIB/@OBJNAM)
//*_>_R CRTSRVPGM SRVPGM(@OBJLIB/@OBJNAM)
//*_>_C MODULE(XVSETL_M01)
//*_>_C SRCFILE(@SRCLIB/@SRCFIL) SRCMBR(XVSETL_B)
//*_>_C TEXT('Set Library List for Environment')
//*_>_C BNDSRVPGM((XVERRH *DEFER)) +
//*_>_C OPTION(*DUPPROC) ACTGRP(*CALLER)

The same with the compile of the module.

//*_>_O DTLMOD MODULE(@OBJLIB/@OBJNAM)
//*_>_R CRTSQLRPGI OBJ(@OBJLIB/@OBJNAM)

//*_>_C SRCFILE(@SRCLIB/@SRCFIL) SRCMBR(@SRCMBR)

//*_>_C OBJTYPE(*MODULE) COMMIT(*NONE) OPTION(*EVENTF)

//*_>_C DBGVIEW(@MODDBG) CLOSQLCSR(*ENDACTGRP) RPGPPOPT(*LVL1)

I cannot specify what commit level or the debug level or the RPGPPOPT
level. Otherwise I have to remember all that.

All just seems very complex.

Suppose I wish to create a *SRVPGM using the Binder Language to define
the procedure exports. Suppose also I wish to use a *BNDDIR to specify
the list of *MODULES to search for these exports.

QUESTION: Why then must the CRTSRVPGM command still have the MODULE
parameter explicitly defined? In other words, why does (at least) one
*MODULE have to be specified explicitly on the command. (The default is
MODULE(*SRVPGM).) The Binder Language will specify the export symbol
table and thus determine other *MODULES that are required from the
*BNDDIR (and hence any other *SRVPGMs/*MODULEs) to complete the bind.

All I can think of is that it allows an exceptional situation where you
want to add one *MODULE to /this/ service program, but no others. The
'stock' *BNDDIR works for almost every situation but this one.

Perhaps an RFE is in order to change the default MODULE()?
