The only reason I would use zoned is for environmental (site-type)
reasons. In our environment, a company number, customer number, vendor
number, employee number, salesperson number, invoice number, etc., etc.,
etc., is not actually a "number" but generally a fixed-length numeric
display value. Thus, we generally use zoned numeric fields mostly to make
it easy to force right justification and left zeroes. but it is true that
we also don't want to see such fields as packed or binary numbers. We
would never otherwise do math on such fields. If we were controlling such
a field from a next-number sequence field then such a next-number field
would be an integer field.
Sincerely,
Dave Clark
