Back somewhere around 2007 I inherited a program that did extensive
text/string manipulation. It ran slowly, but optimizing made a huge
difference. There is, of course, no guarantee it will help now, but it
doesn't cost much to try.

Compiler optimization does make a difference (37 seconds vs. 195 seconds for 1000 records, with a per-record range of 2-302 milliseconds, vs. 5-1661 milliseconds), but it's still a disproportionately large amount of time.
