Here is the salient question. If my understanding is correct, the route cause of this debacle is HCL Technologies is dropping the connections product.

Several of my customers are very unhappy with them over that action, but that's another discussion. It appears that DevelperWorks was built with the connections software, so when HCL drops it, IBM is dropping it too. So while anger at IBM is very warranted, however the real target is HCL. Can we get HCL to give COMMON the needed code to run it on their POWER system until a migration to a wiki or other product can be made?

A business partner that takes it over will undoubtedly be the short term solution if for no other reason than budget but I agree with you a non-aligned public cooperative of some sort would be best.

I don't disagree. I have used the AIX forum on all sorts of IVM/VIOS stuff as well as the Java Forums. So, yeah, way bigger than just IBMi. I posted with my IBMi/COMMON hat on. Larry's post gets to the heart of the current dilemma: If IBM plans to move stuff to communities, where and what and when will that happen? I figure that we, as a community, can be more nimble than IBM so I am hopeful that we work all ends to the middle.

I am currently looking into scraping some stuff and several others are as well. Common, Common Europe and probably quite a few business partners are knocking on IBM's door right now saying "give it to us". We'll see where that leads.

While I appreciate the fact that the COMMON Board might be interested in the IBM i content, there is far more out on DeveloperWorks than IBM i. Much of that content bleeds over in to the IBM i space due to the intersection of the POWER platform. So COMMON would need to take all the technologies that run on POWER as opposed to just the IBM i and/or open source content.

The larger problem as I see it is no matter where it's hosted, the IBM folks will not have nearly the freedom to post things they do today. Today the legal and other departments can control all the content, all the time. When/if it moves to a third party they will loose that control. The normal response from them would be to stop IBM'rs from posting anything meaningful at all. A corollary to that is to control who is able to post and how it is moderated. That's not a small job. Does COMMON have the wherewithal to pull that off?

The decision to drop DeveloperWorks is a galactically stupid move and the best way to really hack off your best customers.
