Under the covers RPG400 uses the single CMPNV MI instruction to do the whole thing. The curious can take Brabara's code and compile with GENOPT(*LIST) then look for the relevant BRK statement.

The docs for CMPNV state that it will "Assign a value to each of the indicator operands (indicator form)." in other words all of the indicators receive a new value - but it might be the same value that was there before.

I am SO happy we got rid of that horrible crap in RPG IV. It will however remain a mystery to me as to why those programs still exist - let alone get maintained rather than converted!

I see a different rule - could be all comparisons are run, then logical ORs used for those that specify the same indicator.

Again, my attempts at reverse engineering usually end up off the beam by quite some measure!

In the RDi help text it says:

You must specify at least one resulting indicator in positions 71 to 76. DO
not specify the same indicator for all 3 conditions. When specified, the
resulting indicators are set on or off to reflect the results of the
compare.

Basically, it implies the last condition tested will turn on or off the
indicator. So an indicator could be turned on and then subsequently off.
Hence the guideline to use different indicators.

The question is: what is the order of the testing by the system?
