hssf max rows issue

I am using hssfr4  procedures to create spreadhsheets.  I have been using for years.  I believe I have the latest version, although I'm not quite sure how to verify, but the comments reference using XLSX
I have the jar files listed

FROM APACHE POI 3.6:
  - poi-3.6-20091214.jar
  - poi-contrib-3.6-20091214.jar
  - poi-examples-3.6-20091214.jar
  - poi-ooxml-3.6-20091214.jar
  - poi-ooxml-schemas-3.6-20091214.jar
  - poi-scratchpad-3.6-20091214.jar

 FROM DOM4J 1.6.1 **:
  - dom4j-1.6.1.jar

 FROM XMLBEANS 2.5.0 **:
  - jsr173_1.0_api.jar
  - xbean.jar

I'm running into max row issues.  Receiving
Java exception "java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid row number
(65536) outside allowable range (0..65535)" when calling method "createRow"
with signature "(I)Lorg.apache.poi.hssf.usermodel.HSSFRow;" in class
"org.apache.poi.hssf.usermodel.HSSFSheet".

We are using Using Excel 2016.
Is there any way to overcome this limitation?
