Whether it's IBM putting the fear of letting maintenance lapse into a
lot of shops, or just an ultraconservative business sense, there is a
certain culture of paying that plenty of places have.

It's also completely unethical to keep charging without providing
something in return. I guess one party is evil and the other is
stupid.

I know my shop is fairly stupid, but we are also incredibly stingy, so
I don't know which of those forces wins out in this case.

Are you talking about paying for Total, or just paying for commercial
software in general?
