I recommend that you create multiple field reference files, just as JD Edwards WorldSoftware specifies 26 field reference files, one for each of the 26 letters of the alphabet, and additional field reference files for $ and @.
When you have many fields to define, you need more field reference files.
I have a misty vague memory that you are describing an IBM limit (record length . . . maximum of 32766)

Subject: [External] Field reference file record length exceeded
[WARNING]: External Email
We have a field reference file and the latest enhancements we are making have caused the record length to exceed the maximum of 32766
I am not aware of any way around this except to try and split the field reference file into two files.
Has anyone else had this problem and how did you resolve it ?
Thanks
Don
