If you need to know the maximum number of array elements then you probably need a lot of elements and perhaps it is time to embrace a more dynamic approach with linked lists and the like. There are some implementations f. e. from Thomas Raddatz (Basics service program), Dieter Bender (Vector service program) and from myself (Linked List, Arraylist, libtree (which is only a wrapper from me for a tree c project).
