So this seems to confirm my idea, that you simply have to select the correct CCSID.

CLOBs and VARCHARs implicitly have a CCSID - so you can cast them without problems. 

But BLOBs do not have a CCSID - they are binary objects. So if you know, that there is "ASCII" text in the BLOB you can try to cast using the correct CCSID.

Just play around with TRY_CAST and different CCSIDs - I would try 1208 (UTF-8), 1200 (UTF-16) and 367 (US-ASCII) first - you probably will find the correct one pretty fast.
