This is why languages like C and Pascal use separate symbols or tokens for "assignment" versus "comparison", e.g.

C uses "=" for assignment, "==" for comparison
Pascal uses ":=" for assignment, "=" for comparison

I suspect this issue may be present in earlier versions of RPG IV in fixed format, with the introduction of the "eval" statement or in "conditions" such as on an IF statement, etc.
