If you called a cl pgm to do the clear file, you would get an error message on the CLRPFM command in the cl program that you can ignore or retry. The cl program returns to the RPG and the RPG continues.

You could try using the OVRMSGF command and defining a message in your *MSGF with the same Message Id as the system message - but with your desired wording and reply options instead. The OVRMSGF could be issued by the RPG IV code, (using QCMDEXC or QCAPCMD)  - or build a simple "wrapper" around the RPG IV program.

I've been out of RPG for a while. It feels like this should be fairly simple, but it is escaping me. Maybe putting it in a MONITOR block, but then how to send a message that can be responded to with a 'C' or 'R'?

A direct call to the RPG program is submitted to a job queue.
In RPG:
Command = 'ClrPfm transacts';
CommandLen = %len( Command );
Callp QCmdExc ( ( Command ) : ( CommandLen ) );

If file transacts is open elsewhere, the job sends message "The call to *LIBL/QCMDEXC ended in error (C G D F)." Instead of that message, I'd like to see a message that gives me (C R) options.
