Just did this using RPG and JDBC using Scott K's tool. Result sets upwards of 10,000+ rows with many columns are surprisingly fast for interactive users looking at the data.

Truthfully it is not ideal compared to SQL. But it works and is 100% stable with users hammering it all day. If it was more than a one off I would probably opt for DRDA.
