I still don't understand why the thing works standalone but not in the
web server; are they using a different JVM for the WTE than for
standalone apps?

Paul, if I were you, I'd crank up one strongly worded PMR (or whatever
the hell it is) and send it in demanding that IBM support the same
features they used to support.
