The problem is, clicking on the stop button does not appear to have any
effect.

Haven't had this happen since going to V6 - have you looked at the job logs
on the System i?  Well actually I have had it happen, but in each case it
was a sign-on or similar dialog that wasn't given focus and is buried under
20 other windows that was the problem.  Sometimes I only found this out as
the workbench died - I never could get it give focus to the problem dialog.

Aside from canceling WDSC entirely, is there any way to get back control
of my workspace?

Not that I have ever discovered.  The problem is that there doesn't seem to
be a time-out on some workbench functions - it is as if it sends the cancel
request to the server - but if the server doesn't answer it just sits there.
