I encountered the same problem....after trial and lots of errors I think 
I have worked out what went wrong for me...

I ended up trying to de-install WDSC using the Install manager, but that 
also ended in (similar) errors, so had to resort to physically deleting 
directories and stuff.

Then re-installed and then I got a hunch what this could be about....I 
suddenly remembered that I had manually changed the generated entries in 
Start->Programs (as I hate having to drill down all these levels...) and 
the errors are referring to "desktop" thingies and "release notes"....

So, I tried a few things and the update only works if I leave the 
generated entries from the initial install in tact...very annoying...
