Buck,
I'm not thinking of a tax, more like it is going to take me time and
effort to learn EGL and if that product turns into a chargeable item
that I won't be able to afford then I feel like I have wasted my time.
I don't get that much extra time to work with things outside of my
normal workload (actually none but don't tell my boss) so I have to make
that time count. If I have a choice of training up on SharePoint or
training up on EGL, then I have to look at what that kind of return on
getting on both. SharePoint, supported and fully funded by the company.
EGL, a product that I might find a use for and might not, and I might
lose access to in the future.
I hope I am making sense with this but I am willing to take the time to
learn new things if I see a continued future use.

If EGL is going to be part of a chargeable version or at least a
higher charge than the base, why would I want to learn it? I mean it
is going to be a struggle to get the money for the existing developers

additional amount based on the fact the "I would like to try it out"?
or have I completely missed the boat?
Don't think of it as a tax on Web programmers, think of it as a discount
for green screen folk. That's undoubtedly the intent, to only pay for
what you actually use. Today, us RPG-only guys have to pay for the
development of all the web goodies even though we don't want them.
In a perfect world, Rational would set the prices in such a way that
they make money off the base RDi product and the extension too. Since
there will be fewer units sold of the extension, and they clearly have a
larger development group, that _should_ mean a decent discount for those
of us who buy only the base product.

ps. This is not a flame of any person, product, concept or
implementation. It's just an opinion.
