It's not so much that it's likely, as that it's possible and is really easy to prevent, so why not lock the PC when I'm away? FWIW, I have no problems leaving my keys and wallet in plain view on my desk, so it's not a hostile environment, but I can see how it might have seemed like it.

Not only that, but other programmers have been known to joke around by sending messages to other IT staff from the sessions of people who didn't lock them when they left. For example, "Hi everyone, ice cream on me at break time." :)
