There are laptops, such as the one I use, a Lenovo T60, which allow doing
the standard windows 'stretch display' function on the attached monitor.
It must require a discreet graphics chip. No special software required.

I agree with Bryce.
Luckily I am the decision-maker here with regards to dual monitors, so
most of my people either have dual monitors or a 24" (or larger)
monitor. Screen real estate is critical to productivity. Minimizing
one app to look at another causes a loss of focus, and developers can
not afford to lose focus. For those using large monitors, most of us
also use a laptop as a secondary screen. Two large monitors does not
work on every desk, but if your secondary is a laptop you can always
close/move it to regain space on your physical desk as needed.
And if you choose to go the laptop route, check out a program called
Multiplicity from Stardock. Simplifies dual use by letting you fluidly
move your mouse and keyboard control back and forth between the
desktops. Very sweet.
Rdi/WDSC are screen hogs, so you have to give them all you can to stay
productive.

I would strongly urge you to do some googling on the subject of multiple
monitors and productivity gains. It has been found that just having a
second monitor can increase productivity over %20 and more depending on
the sizes of the monitors and the tasks being performed.
