With Win7 I have learned to create a directory:  C:/Utilities, and then 
install any non Microsoft software there.  (I let M$ stuff go into 
defaults) This avoids some of the security feature issues built into 
Win7 but also provides a nice place to see everything too.

Since I use multiple desktops (I run VMWare Workstation on my desktop 
and a separate copy of Windows for each client to keep them separated) 
by sharing the folder that has the environments in it, I can keep all 
the customer environments in one spot to make them easier to back up and 
transport as needed.

When I originally started I used the defaults.  I found an uninstall, 
reinstall cleaned up quite a few usability issues that were quite 
annoying, and made things easier to manage in bargain.
