I'm on 9.0.0.1 - if I understand you, this works fine for me.

I drag the tab to the right, say - it may take half or a third of the 
screen.

I drag the tab of the one on the right - drag it back to the tabs on the 
left - it joins up and the whole width is taken up by one of the editor 
windows.

Note that I drag it back into the tabs, not into the window on the left.
