Hi Edmund,

It's great to hear about all the nice features of the live outline view for RPG but when, if ever, are you guys going to remember us dinosaur Cobol developers and give us an comparable outline?

Best regards,

At one point both the static outline and the content assist relied on the output of the program verifier to get information about the current RPG source. And yes, you needed to hit Refresh on the outline view to get up to date info for content assist.
Now that we have live outline, both content assist and the outline view work off of an in-memory model of the current RPG source that is maintained on every key stroke.
So content assist is no longer dependent on the outline view if you are using the live outline option. So you could have the outline view close and content assist would still have up-to-date information.

Eventually we plan to deprecate the static outline view once the live outline has all of capabilities of the static outline, we are still short a couple of features, like O-specs and DEFINE op codes and line conditioning.

I'm sure there's been a lot of discussion on list about the value the Outline provides. Whether it applies to you would be another story.

I use it for a lot of things, but primarily I use it to navigate. Either to a procedure, or to where that procedure is called from. You can do the same through Find, but I find click navigation to be faster for me.

The even greater benefit to me is that content-assist uses the information built by the outline. So w/o the outline, content assist would be crippled. At least that's my understanding.

Question is alright to use the "LIVE OUTLINE" again?

Anybody having problem with Live-Parsing?

To this day I can't figure out what the value-add is for the outline view.
So I pretty much only look at it when someone posts a question here.
Having said that, I discovered that my live outline has been turned on ever since I installed 9.0.1 and RDi has been smooth as silk for me - I didn't even know I had live outline turned on.

My workspace is on my local PC, not on a network drive.
