Wouldn't life be simpler if the RPG compiler team enabled a compiler
parameter/control specification keyword to accept a variable text width?

Something like the MARGINS parameter that was implemented in IBM i 6.1 for
the RUNSQLSTM command, where the default is 80 but the user can specify
something larger if needed?
