Visual studio use to be a monolithic install which took forever. As of VS 2017 that is no longer the case. Are you running that version? Takes less than 10 minutes to install for me, but I only install the web development features, not all the linux, Xamarin, c++, etc tools.
Granted I am running a pretty good PC with a SSD and have fast internet to pull the install pieces.
Good video here about the changes:

There is pretty much a video for every feature of visual studio you are wanting to know about. There are tons of videos on Lynda.com and Pluralsight as well.
I searched Lynda.com and Pluralsight.com for "rational developer" or "RDi", no results found.

Side note, some of my fellow Microsoft Developers have to re-install Visual Studio maybe in 3-10 months...
While on IBM RDI 9.5.1.2, I only had to re-install it because I was playing around with plug-ins. And I realized I had screw it up. So, I decided to do the 20-minute re-install. That time the New work space trick did not work. But, I was playing around, and did something out of the "ordinary"...
Or all, I like Visual Studio, a much better user-experience and more intuitive navigation...
I also like that RDI allows me to filter by a find string. Visual studio cannot do that...
The BIGGEST thing that bothers me about ECLIPSE, and I cannot zoom-in and out of text size. I wish the tool bar had "+"/"-" to increase/decrease the font...
While on Visual studio, and many other IDE, you can zoom in/out with your MOUSE WHEEL....
And my co-workers might be running many different virtual boxes, and other high end stuff. But, still takes them approximate 90-Minutes to reload Visual Studio.
We use Softlanding/Turnover for our change Management, and it is Normally, VERY RELIABLE! <Joy Joy>
PS. Tons of people have already complained about RDI/Eclipse not having a simple Zoom In/OUT feature... I think an RFE is out there already.... Still DREAMING about that one...

Agreed. I have to use DBeaver as IBM only provides the notepad of SQL editors. I still have to drop back to the no-longer-supported IBM I Navigator to do some tasks as ACS still hasn't got all the features Navigator had. So basically now I tab through DBeaver, IBM I Navigator, and ACS to get tasks complete. Very poor user experience.
I've never had to reinstall visual studio. Granted I'm running the latest and greatest and have a minimal amount of addon plugins from their extensive online addon repository. Addon plugins can definitely cause Visual Studio issues. For instance I once had the markdown viewer from Mads Kristensen installed, but occasionally it would cause visual studio to crash when you were viewing a markdown file. Uninstalled plugin and no more issues. Didn't have to reinstall visual studio. But figuring out what addon is causing the problem, that can be tricky sometimes.

Well, my Microsoft co-workers now have problems with visual studio all the time. And they have to reload, which take them 1.5 hours.
On the extremely rare instance that I have to reload RDI, it take me 20-minutes or under! Awesome!
But, comparing MS SQL Server VS IBM Data Studio, Microsoft wins all around...
What to retrieve the sql source? Right-click and retrieve....
Want to see the field name, code-assist is EXCELLENT...
What a quick sql script for the top 100, once again Microsoft wins...
Microsoft is a better User-Experience for develop SQL..

RDi vs Visual Studio is a toss-up and comes down to personal preference.
MS SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) definitely has the edge (why can't I edit a subset with Data Studio?!?). Although I think some of the cool things in SSMS are paid add-ons for SQL Server.

Hi,
It is probably a new version from 9.5 to 9.6, because it is upgraded to eclipse 4.6 Neon, versus the older eclipse 4.4 Luna.
And Java is now 1.8, and they call a new version at the .8 (version-8). <LOL> Which makes no sense to me either...
So, normally going from 9.5 to 9.6, in my mind is not a new version. But, following the java version paradigm it does make sense. And RDI 9.6 has 2 versions new of eclipse, Neon! Cool!
Sadly, I just have to accept that. Luckily, my employer bought the software maintenance plan called AAS, I think. So, we are stuck waiting another 5-days before we can actually upgrade...
One of the directors, who works will a lot of Microsoft developers. Say, if Microsoft developer have a powerful IDE, then so should the AS400 (circa 1999), actual IBM i should have a powerful IDE. <Big Smile>
Yup, they still call the IBM i the AS400. The Microsoft folks do that deliberately, to make it look older. I asked them if they program for the Hardware or the Software. They said the OS/Software. And then I asked why they call IBM i AS400? It is to make the Microsoft stuff look "MODERN". By the way, they out number us about 4 to 1. Guess who is winning at my work place????
Sadly, we replicate data from db2 to Microsoft sql, because they have better tools. And accessing directly to Microsoft is much faster than a remote call to DB2. They LAUGHED when I show them IBM Data Studio compared to MS SQL manager it is a complete joke in comparison.
So, anyway, this is a good lesson for everyone to buy the software maintenance, because in the long run, it will be much cheaper.
PS. Yes, I am drooling and eagerly awaiting the 9.6 version next week...
