Yes, newbies roll their eyes at the install, but that is nothing...

Most are not use to windows, over the old Dumb terminals, where you have a "SINGLE-VIEW" and not multiple "window" views...

Like anything new, it takes time to get used to it. But, once you do, most will refused to go back to SEU. Especially for code analysis. The Outline view is AWESOME!!! Not to mention code-assist, show nesting, re-indent free-format code, multiple split screens, Debug with multiple monitors. And much much more...

Keep it simple, and slowly spoon-feed them. The young ones, and those not stuck in the 20th century pick it up very fast!

The install was night/day different. Downloading the images didn't take that long, but extracting the zip files had an estimate of 1 hour plus for each of them.

Copying the workspace was great also.

It would just be nice to have a short, concise (i.e. one page of bullet points) step-by-step on how to do this - I somehow think this would be a monumental task for IBM (LOL). It's been a while, but I vaguely recall similar frustrations with a previous install.

Maybe this is a bigger hurdle to SEU users than you think?

Greg, I do highly recommend the web install approach. We have optimized it to be the fastest and least complicated for an individual to install.
It will only download the Installation Manager which is launched pointing back to our repository. You pick what features you want and then it only downloads those and installs them for you. Since I assume you are not using the Java Modernization Edition, but rather the base RPG & COBOL tools, this will be a small fraction of the download.

Point the new installed RDi to a copy of your old workspace and you will be up and running in a matter of minutes, not hours.
You will love some of the new features. People really like the new hovers that give you rich information about where definitions come from. I.e.
which database library/file/record/fields and I Specs and data structures etc. all contributed to the definition.
Lot's of other folks on the list can attest to other features that you will like (Ken just mentioned Tab/Enter)

Edmund

Ken,

Thanks... I'll try the web install. I don't have the time nor the patience to upgrade using the other route.

IBM can blame "old programmers" for not wanting to move to RDi... but I guarantee you the millennials will not be patient enough to tolerate the standard install. It's beyond ridiculous that something takes this long to install in 2018.

Sorry if I'm being "harsh" - but who has the time to spend an entire day just to update a piece of software?

Greg

Greg,

Yes, the extract process takes a while, but it seems to be about 20-minutes for me...

You could also try the web-install instead.

I apologize ahead of time... I know this has probably been covered. But is there a SIMPLE document outlining the install/upgrade process from v9.5 to v9.6?

I'm not sure what I downloaded, but ONE of the zip files is going to take an HOUR to extract. Something doesn't seem right. I just need the RPG/Cobol version.

Thx,
Greg
