I worked for an aerospace company with strict SOX regulations. We had a procedure similar to Alan's procedure for QSECOFR (the secured envelope). We also had individual second user profiles with elevated security. The profiles had logging activated so every command was logged to the journals in case we had to use them. The role of the auditors is to make sure you have the correct security for your tasks, and not any more. If you have a business case to occasionally need it, then work with the management and auditors to come up with a solution to either grant the security when needed and revoke it afterwards; or have access to a profile with appropriate elevated security. As long as you can show what changed, you should be compliant.
