 >> Jon, can you comment on "Websphere....it has it's place"?

The main applications we have put up under WebSphere perform well and were
developed very quickly using JSPs and servelets. It is possible that they
could have been developed as quickly using RPG CGI but I doubt it. There
are bits that would have been better written in RPG, but because of the
skill set of the team and the desire to be able to port the applications to
other platforms that was not done.

Because IBM are pushing both WebSphere and WebFacing I believe that both
will be important in the future. So much of the new stuff out of IBM is
oriented around WebSphere it is hard to ignore. Unlike other IBM
initiatives in the past such as SAA and AD/Cycle, WebSphere is different.
There actually is a real market need for the product (witness the
competition) and there are real products, not vaporware and promises.

It won't kill CGI programming whether based on e-RPG, CGIDEV2, or Joe's
tools. It will co-exist with them and I think that is a good thing. I'm
not in favor of a "one size fits all" approach - nor do I believe in
switching to Java for the sake of it. It is still too slow and there is
still the chance that MS will succeed in squashing it (hopefully a slim
chance but ....).

If CGIDEV2 has worked for you I'd have no qualms about continuing to use
it. I might tend to use JSPs for semi-static pages, and I might use some
servelets etc., but I'm still going to code in RPG for the bulk of my
back-end processing.
