I humbly suggest that the extensive body of CGI is due, in part, to inertia.
It was the only thing available, so it got used by early-adapters.  As more
people start to understand the business implications, they will be looking
for better solutions; those folks *will* accept java and other solutions
because they it is easier (in their minds) to code and is stable and robust.

Many vendors *are* embracing java as an alternative to CGI...  they are
actively re-writing existing apps for Java...

I think you'll find a large number of on-line vendors would disagree with
that blanket statement.

Many, many, many, systems are written with CGI.  Not necessarily RPG (darn
few, unfortunately), but still with CGI.

Although I don't have hard facts to back it up, I belive that the majority
of web apps are written in languages other than Java & JSP.
