First Internet application -- WEB400

Oops...screwed up again with a private post to Mark.  Shimata.

BVS has a great approach (his current book is an absolute requirement for
ANYBODY starting in this environment; just remember to remove the freakin'
CD before you stick the book in your backpack) but I'm getting lazy and
appreciate all the code already written by Mel Rothman.  It's available from
IBM Italy at http://www.easy400.ibm.it/en.

My perspective: these are the primary issues, with an
exponentially-increasing PITA factor:
(1) RPG CGI programming
(2) HTML vs. DDS
(3) The unstable and unsecure Internet environment.

Here's why I like CGIDEV2:
(1) You can have "formats" within a single HTML file.  HTML doesn't support
this but Mel's implemented it with a special start tag ("< >" thingie).
This simplifies your programming.
(2) The housekeeping to retrieve and post variables is very easy (Mel
provides a subprocedure; variables look like this "/%variable%/" in HTML).
(3) There is simple support for reading your HTML from the IFS; this makes
it easy to use real HTML editors.
(4) The service program (the guts of this thing) is pretty smart: it keeps
HTML active (as part of the service program); this helps response time.

Brad Stone may (okay, <VBG> will) have comments, and I may have
missed/misunderstood some of his concepts.  His responses will, without
question, add to the value of this discussion.

I'm thinking about the "Internet shoot-out" proposal that's been bandied
about.  If this event happens, it will be a great way to get everybody into
the ring and let the spectators compare.  Maybe we need another session to
award a "Defender Of The Faith" prize, to be given to the NG contributor
showing the most impassioned support for a product, service, or technique.
Brad Stone and Joe Pluta are my candidates; I'd pay to watch that one!

Please don't take this to private email!  I am quite certain that there are
MANY lurkers who would find this discussion extremely enlightening, and it
would make a wonderful FAQ when finished.  This forum is the absolutely
perfect place to discuss it.  Just change the subject line to something like
"First intranet application" or some such so we can readily track it.
