If you look at Eclipse, you'll see that even IBM decided the "presentation" controls that Java has are too darn slow for a real IT shop to use. So they decided to NOT use them and went with the native Windows and Motif controls. Java is pretty good as a user interface control language, but the native Swing controls and Java in general, just doesn't perform well enough to warrant moving a mission critical application to it, unless performance is not an issue. > -----Original Message----- > From: web400-admin@midrange.com > [mailto:web400-admin@midrange.com] On Behalf Of Eyers, Daniel > Sent: Friday, July 12, 2002 2:02 PM > To: 'web400@midrange.com' > Subject: RE: [WEB400] Resort back to RPG? > > > I wonder how RPG will be able to handle things like reading > Excel spreadsheets natively or handle network connectivity > (i.e. java.net) or run effectively on a PC. > > Java "for presentation" is a short sided view, at best; > certainly not appropriate for a company that supposedly > embraces open source efforts. > > dan > > -----Original Message----- > From: Nathan M.
