I have felt several times in the past during discussions like this that I am
constantly defending my decision to write new applications in Java, not
because I want to or that I'm a bandwagoneer, but because I need to be
platform independent and I need to get there in a hurry.

Thanks for saying this.

I fully acknowledge the limitations/drawbacks/differences between coding
Business Applications in RPG and Java. I would like to add one part to
Joe's challenge of writing a "non-trivial business app in OO" and that is to
do it in a manner that is platform independent and supports a thick-client
GUI.
