to clarify, since you need to wait for the update to happen, the refresh of
the item list has to be initiated by the cost change cgi.  since any
response to your browser(s) will go to the cost change window, shown below
is a very small web page that will run in the cost change browser.  it
closes, then it runs a function named 'refresh()' that already exists in
the 'caller' window (the item list window) which simply submits the build
item list cgi, with the proper parameters.

btw, my syntax is off.  that's what i get for writing it in an email
client.

should be:
