In the <head> section of your document, you should have a line like this:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" />

IE, Mozilla, and other browsers will pick up your fav icon.
You can see my personal homepage at <http://www.blackrobes.net/> for an
example.

Also note that the .ico is /not/ a picture or bitmap file, but is a
specially formatted icon file. Does your icon editor support favicon.ico
formats? I made my icon a long time ago, so I forget the specifics.

Loyd

Has anyone sucessfully got the favicon to work? I'm got an favicon.ico that
I created in an icon editor, saved it at 16x16x256 yet if I point to it, my
browser wants to open or save it. If i choose open, the icon opens up in my
icon viewer. Pointing to Yahoo or MSNBC for example
(www.yahoo.com/favicon.ico or www.msnbc.com/favicon.ico) simply displays the
icon right in IE. My icon is no different than their in dimensions and
color depth so I think it's the HTTP server balling it up.
