agreed use something to export the image in the size you want.  that way it 
won't become distorted.

i use fireworks mx and/or photoshop 7.

At least when the image is larger, you should instead of coding

<input type="image" src="/whatever/OK.gif" width="50" height="50">

resize it with an image-editor. That saves bytes and time and usually
delivers better results than the browser.
