Upon restarting the subsystem I notice:
Job User Type -----Status----- Function
QEJBMQLSR QEJBSVR BATCHI ACTIVE PGM-RUNMQLSR
SERVER1 QEJBSVR AUTO ACTIVE PGM-QEJBSTRSVR
WAS5PORTAL QEJBSVR AUTO ACTIVE PGM-QEJBSTRSVR
and after almost 20 minutes the browser shows server1 running and
was5portal stopped.

Server1 job has:
Server starting with user profile QEJBSVR and JDK 1.3.1.
WebSphere application server server1 ready.
(Took just over 4 minutes between the two messages.)

was5portal job has:
Server starting with user profile QEJBSVR and JDK 1.3.1.
Job 547746/QEJBSVR/ENDMQCSV started.
...
Job 509847/QUSER/QSQSRVR used for SQL server mode processing.
...
Job 547869/QUSER/QSQSRVR used for SQL server mode processing.
WebSphere application server WAS5Portal ready.
(Took 20 minutes for that last message to appear!)
Now the browser finally shows it as running.

That last message:
SQL0237
Cause . . . . . : The SQLDA only provided 20 SQLVAR entries. Since at
least
one of the columns being described is a distinct type or a LOB, 36
SQLVAR
entries should have been specified. None of the secondary SQLVAR
entries
have been set. Since at least one of the columns is a distinct type or a

LOB, space should be provided for twice as many SQLVAR entries as the
number
of columns. Only the base SQLVAR entries have been set.

Searching the ptf cover letters for MSGSQL0237 shows a plethora of hits
for 520, 510 and a few earlier. None for 530.
