Shane,

Thanks much. I'm going to look at downloading the IBM/Zend version if I can
find it as it seems to access DB2/400 other than with ODBC.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

I've installed the Zend Core for i5/OS...very easy to do...and it works
like a charm...and we're on V5R3...

I'm just waiting for training...

Jim,

You might be right, PHP might be my answer, but one of the respondents
here said their Zend PHP install was a total disaster. However, they
did say it was a while back. But, I can be convinced.

As to where I heard about PHP not able to grow... a comparison article
in iSeries News. If I remember correctly, what came out of that article
that compared several development languages was... for quicky apps,
consider PHP and some others, for robust enterprise apps, go with Java
or .NET, the latter because its so ingrained in the market place. I
want to see if that's still true.

As to open to combining technologies... you bet. I like to use the
right tool for the job and have several in my toolbox.

Dave,
As the IBM Alliance Manager here at Zend I would be remiss if I didn't
chime in.

Based on your initial requirements you can use PHP in many ways:
BCD's
product, open source frameworks, or use skeletons where you only need
to
tweak some of the code vs. writing from scratch, etc.

I do have to inquire where can we view the research that shows PHP
isn't
able to grow as well as Java and .NET. Additionally you haven't
brought
up performance. Run some performance tests comparing .NET to PHP on
System i/AS400.

Are you open to combining technologies? Ie, using both PHP and Java?
Outside of the System I community there are many companies using a
blended solutions of Java and PHP. Obviously, using a blended
solution
is dependent upon requirements and programming capabilities.

Regarding communicating w/ different platforms: remember, Microsoft,
Oracle, and IBM all have financial arrangements w/ Zend to create
products and support their respective channels.

Mike,

OK, to be very specific... I mean languages that will communicate
effectively and efficently with multi-platforms and RDBMs, like
mainframe, midrange, DB2, ORACLE, SQLServer, etc.

Like the idea about Java since it's very robust and extensible but
concerned about its learning curve unless there are tools to shorten
the
build process yet not create non-standard Java. Would consider PHP
but
research, so far, shows its not able to grow as well as Java or .NET.
Don't want to be in the MickySoft camp but have to consider them.

Thanks,

Dave

ASP is a multi-platform language?!? I thought it only run on Windows.
PHP and Java are true multi-platform languages.

Brad,

Thanks very much for your response. Even though we have some canned
program products written in RPG, no, we don't develop nor maintain
RPG.

We only develop in multi-platform IBM SAA languages, like REXX or
common
marketplace, multi-platform, mature web languages like classic .ASP,
HTML, yes I like style sheets, VB, javascript and can use Java
(WebSphere environment or not) although don't have any skill in Java
yet, will consider other common marketplace, multi-platform, mature
languages.

Dave,

First it's important to understand if you're building a web
application,
no matter the langauge/tool/etc you use you'll be buidling dynamic
HTML,
using Javascript, Stylesheets (hopefully), etc. All that is the same
no matter the tool used.

For my clients I normally ask if they are an RPG shop. If so, I
suggest
CGIDEV2 or my eRPG SDK (www.erpgsdk.com).
These allow you to write web application using RPG. So, if you can
build them using RPG and green screens, then this is just changing the
delivery method to use the web.
Which requires the knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, etc.

What architecture/language/tool would you all recommend for

an in-house web application that provides the following:

- Menu items that allow users to invoke certain limited

submit specific i5 jobs, invoke specific i5 programs built in REXX
and

other languages under a secondary userid with authorities
- Display current and other user's spoolfiles using another userid
with authorities
- And administrative function that easily allows IS to grant and
revoke access to specific users to individual menu items built in the

web application.

What I'm trying to do is:

- build a web application that will allow some very spoiled users
that

have had WAY to many privileges, access to certain specific
capabilities without giving them all the special authorities they've

had in the past.
- build it with a language or tool that has robust capabilities but
doesn't take a master to build anything, supports rapid application
development, is flexible enough to grow with the needs of the
business, doesn't cost a arm and a leg, uses a common language for
which there are human resources easily available on the market

I've done i5 Web applications in .ASP, HTML, Javascript and can do
this job with those tools once again but there might be a better
mousetrap out there so thought I'd ask. I have WebSphere and I think

its Developer tools available on the i5.

Thanks in advance for your advice,

Dave Odom
