To reply to my own post, www.pmwiki.org has handy listings of "Cookbooks",
standard changes/enhancements to the core package. While not the easiest
thing to weed through, it did provide me with the needed icons and php
code to enhance the editor. The instructions tend to be written by users,
for users. At times a newbie (me!) gets lost figuring out what the
shorthand is refering to, but there are plenty of examples and lots of
code to re-use.
The results aren't WYSIWYG, but at least the user can select a portion of
text and click an icon to do any number of functions: bold, highlight,
backlight, subscript, superscript, italicize, underline, right and left
justify, etc. The results can be previewed without saving the changes.
