Thanks, Matt.

I'm a big fan of wrapping RPG functionality as an external stored procedure.
My issue is product specific at this point since I don't know if Varsity
provides a clean programmatic interface. An ex-employee made a half hearted
attempt to write one some years back but it looks like they just took the
Varsity screen interface program and ripped out screens until it did one
thing poorly and that one thing doesn't translate well to retail customers.

I wanted to give the list a shot because my experiences with their support
haven't been productive and I believe my boss is presently wrastling with
their license renewal fees.

Alfred,

I haven't done this specifically (our rate calculator was written in
house) but when I need to expose this type of functionality to either Java
or systems running off-box, I typically create an external stored procedure
to do it. Depending upon how the parameters are passed in, you may be able
to get by with just defining the SQL procedure but if you pass in data
structures, you'll probably want to write a helper program to make the calls
easier to make.

Subject: [WEB400] Varsity Shipping Rate Optimizer

Good morning,

We're a JDE shop and we utilize a shipping rate optimizer from Varsity
Logistics that suggests the best/cheapest carriers for orders. Order items
can range from small and expensive to large and cheap so whether we use a
freight company vs. ground vs. air is important.

Has anyone on the list had experience interfacing with Varsity when
creating
an e-commerce order process? For established customers it's possible to
have
esoteric shipping data in their record but for a retail customer I'd
really
be looking to just provide an origin zip code, a destination zip code, and
some information about the items being shipped. In either case cleanly
obtaining the output to format for a user would be necessary.

If you know of an add-on product that can meet these requirements I'm open
to those suggestions, too.

Thanks,
Alfred
